From “Don’t judge a book by its cover” to “Don’t look at the jug, but at what it contains” (an old Rabbinic saying), we’re constantly taught that the contents of things are more important than the vessels, wrappers, and boxes that hold them in place. This week, let’s give outer shells their due and focus our lenses on things that contain other things.
Says Ben Huberman, at the Daily Post.
I love containers, who doesn’t? They are full of feminine symbolism. I decided to snap a few of my favourite containers.
My last photo, the only one in colour, is a painting contained in a frame. It was painted for me by Stuart Whitelaw, and brought all the way from Australia when he and Christine visited last month. It is of the beautiful lotus leaves on the dam at Dadirri, Christine’s favourite plants.

A gratitude jar is such a good idea. It certainly helps to focus the mind on the good things each day.
I started a gratitude jar this year as well.
The painting is stunning in its simplicity and I’m sure you treasure it for what it stands for.
These are all so beautiful, Gilly, but the painting is gorgeous. How lovely that you have this memento of Stuart and Christine’s visit.
grattitude jar ; novel concept yes indeed! 🙂
Beautiful selection, Gilly.
That Malaysian container is soooo pick-upable – I want to hold it in my cupped hands, feeling the silky texture and density of the polished wood. Love Stuart’s lotus leaves … what a lovely ‘hello’ gift to bring all that way, and now, such a poignant reminder of their visit, and friendship. I think of him every day, wondering how he’s coping with her absence. Sometimes it seems there’s a terrible price to be paid for a lifetimes joy.
Oh, Gilly- what a memory! When I commented on yours the other day I had Christine in my mind. She’s never far away, is she?
Hugs! 🙂
I liked the ceramic bowl but the painting’s knocked the wind out of my sails.
All are beautiful; the painting priceless…
I love them all & was really touched by the painting.
Beautiful pictures!
Gilly, what a beautiful collection, imbued with so much personal meaning! Stuart’s gorgeous painting made me teary.
I love the gratitude jar Gilly. But my goodness…Stuart’s painting. Such a beautiful gift. It resonates doesn’t it ? With Christine. I hope her family is doing okay.
Awesome collection of containers you’ve showcased for us, Gilly. They are all outstanding and gorgeous. I’m sure that the painting from Stuart and Christine are your favorite treasure. A lovely memory to keep her close at heart. 😘
