OH MY. “your golden prize has fallen like lost wedding bands from hands of grieving widows” – what an amazing couple of lines! I think that image is going to haunt me. Very autumnal. And as I re-read your tanka, I realize that you’ve kind of combined poetic forms from Japanese and English (meter and alliteration)…I love this one, Gilly.
Thanks Sharon, it was a quickie, I really am too lazy to learn about meter and all that stuff. I just know a tanka is 5-7-5-7-7 and that’s about my limit 🙂
Beautiful combination Gilly….I love the sad fading romance of autumn, and the year turning inwards.
Ahh thanks Seonaid, your comments mean a lot.
Sad and haunting words. Powerful.
Thanks so much 🙂
Schöne Worde lieber Gruß und einen schönen Tag Gruß und Freundschaft.Gislinde
Danke Gislinde 🙂
Poignant imagery, Gilly. Soul stirring 🙂
Praise indeed from the mistress of form 🙂
I felt a sadness. Life’s most heartbreaking event but something we can’t escape.
Thankyou, I’m happy to have made an impact!
Wow!
“…like lost wedding bands
from hands of grieving widows…”
Sad, but beautiful. Awesome, Gilly. I love the imagery.
Thanks Tess, I’m glad you liked it 🙂
Awesome.
You took me back to autumn in Canada. Peaceful, thank you. There is a lot to be said for the change of seasons, I do miss that!
Beautiful and sad at the same time. Well done. 🙂
You’re very kind it’s just a little thing.

It seems to me that some types of meter just happen naturally when you write in English – maybe that’s how it got into this poem! 🙂
This is mournful but I loved the swaying frond.
Thank you, maybe its about waiting for spring!
We all are !!!!
wow, such rich, poignant words. an evocative poem. love the image, too.
Great combination!
