      1. yes, an important food plant both here and in New Zealand …. The roots were used by Aboriginals as flour but needed to be treated carefully as they contain toxic elements. Leaves were also used for weaving and string making. The Maori in New Zealand ate the peeled roots and the young shoots and made the copious pollen into cakes (Crowe 1981, 107-08). yes, cumbungi!
