Full Tanka Day Five

Hey, begonia
who wouldn’t be cheered by you?
such beautiful blooms
orange as orange can be
maybe you fell from heaven

  1. Hi, Gilly. I would really appreciate it if you would give me permission to use this tanka poem and the haiku poem that you wrote entitled “Rushes” as part of my curriculum for my writing students in our new “Writing Poetry” class. I would, of course, give you full credit and include your blog address as well. If you don’t mind my using them, I also need to find out exactly how to spell your last name. I know I’ve seen it somewhere on here, but I can’t find it now. If you don’t want me to use these, please feel free to tell me, but they are such good examples of these forms that I had to ask.

    Thank you so much.
    Sandra

    1. Hi Sandra, of course you can use my poems, I think I gave you permission to use one before. I love the idea of young people in the US reading my little words! My last name is Goldsworthy, on Lucid Gypsy I also use Mbachu, my fathers surname, but you can skip that for simplicity. I’d love to know what your students think about haiku and tanka – not just mine but the forms in general.
      Enjoy my dear 🙂

      1. I knew we had talked about one other poem before, but I wanted to make sure it was okay to actually print these into the curriculum. They will have all your credits printed with them. I think the students will really enjoy them and learning about the two forms. Some people are a little afraid of trying these forms, but actually, I think in a way they can be easier for people who are just learning because they are so short. I feel that way about the Cinquain as well.

It will be a while before we get to these forms, because the class hasn’t started yet, but I’m excited about it. This is a new venture for me too. I’ve taught a lot of poetry, but I’ve never taught a class in how to write poetry before. That’s why I waned to put together my own curriculum — so we could cover the things that I feel are important. It’s fun to be able to include works from my personal writing friends in that curriculum. Thanks so much for your help.

      2. I’m thrilled to bits, thank you! I’m really not a poet and only started writing any under duress, for part of a course a few years ago. I enjoy it now and find these short forms really very easy – five minutes jobs, but you probably hadn’t better tell your students that 🙂
