If you’ve followed me for a while you’ll know that I love to visit gardens and of course that means I have a gazillion photos of flowers. I don’t post many flowers because I don’t want to bore you all, but this weeks photo challenge has given me an excuse to!
Jen H. says,
The Rule of Thirds is a photography concept that puts the subject of the photograph off-center, which usually results in blank space in the rest of the image. If you focus closely on your subject and use a wide aperture, your photograph’s background will also be beautifully blurred in that blank space. The blurred area behind your focal point is referred to as bokeh, and when executed well, it adds depth and artistry to an otherwise simplistic photograph.
When I go somewhere with my camera I try to find a balance between staying in the moment and recording what I see. I don’t think too much about the techy stuff but rely on my eye instead. So, while I know about the rule of thirds, it isn’t at the forefront of my mind.Perhaps you’ll tell me if I’ve got anywhere close to Jen’s challenge.

Beautiful…as always.
Lovely shots. Beautiful colors.
You’re a natural, Gilly. These are perfect for the challenge. Seems to me you’ve accomplished what you’re supposed to. ❤
Oh my gosh, you definitely “captured” the challenge here, especially with that lovely dark purple flower (a tulip?) Lots of the “bokeh” concept on these photos.
Well thanks for explaining it to me, Gilly. Looks like you’ve really got this down pat. Wonderful images. You can ‘bore’ me with flowers any time. 🙂
these are stunning!
Great job. Your eye is a lot like mine. I put a lens to my eyes and see what is really there. Hugs, Barbara

Lovely photos, Gilly, capturing the essence of the flowers. Who cares about the rule of thirds…rules are there to be broken.
While in the middle (OK, maybe the last third) of winter, it’s so nice to see such beautiful colors and flowers.

Gorgeous shots and lovely job with the bokeh in all of them.
Very nicely done. I think I like the top right best, but just because of the second flower in the background.
A great collection Gilly. Never too many flowers. The tulip and the bees are my favourites. And I always like that blotchy background. I also like your balance between ‘in the moment’ and capturing the moment.
I think the background in the top left photo is blurred to just the right degree.
The colors are stunningly beautiful. The vibrant one on the bottom left in a deep eggplant color is my favorite. But, they’re all winners.
Well done … !!! : )
Flowers. Well you know about me and flowers! I could happily look at them all day. You have captured the bokeh aspect of this challenge very well Gilly. I must admit I found that aspect rather a strange example of the ‘rule of thirds’. In my mind they are very separate aspects of photography. Never mind. I like what I see. 🙂
Looking at flowers is never boring Gilly, especially when they are so beautiful
I’m no expert on this stuff — I love bokeh but can’t manage it with my point and shoot, and sort of know the rule of thirds but not so well as to be able to really do it.
But these are lovely shots, and the last three especially seem to me to fill the bill, with the black tulip being perfect!
Great eye and the blooms so lovely to start my chilly gray Monday morning. Nice, Gilly.
Hooray! I love your plummy tulip, Gilly 🙂 I think you’ve done a brilliant job on that and the bee shots.
Pretty!
