100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups Week #112

It’s been months since I took part in Julia’s challenge, and even now I nearly missed this weeks brilliant photo prompt. It made me laugh though and I couldn’t resist.

So here is my little flash.

Jonah

He could see them in the distant light. Size nines with his charity shop jeans tucked in, but his feet weren’t in them now. He tried tugging his rod but lost his grip this time. Damn, it was the best one he owned, and he nearly had the catch of his life with it. Until the creature caught him. What was a whale doing there anyway?

He reached for a tooth to pull himself up, slipped on saliva into a mattress of grey blubber, soft as down, and there slept on, dreaming dreams of loch monsters and Moby Dick.

You have until midnight to stop me being the last entry! Go to,

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups Week# 97

Julia has given us just one word this week,  HEAT – at last we’re feeling it on this small island! ‘Take it in any direction you like’ she says. At work today I took it to lunch with me.

Heat

I feel like a seal must feel, slippery, smooth and slick with moisture. Beneath the shade of dappled beech leaves, I sit awhile. A patchwork pattern of sunbeams, peep through the green canopy and above a happy blackbird trills its summer joy. My ears catch the crescendo of Flybe’s twelve forty-five to the Costas, but for once I feel no envy of the flyers, instead I have England at its best, with late orange blossom flourishing it’s fragrance on the breeze.

Alas I must retreat to my desk or risk burnt knees in the heat of my lunch break.

In case you’re wondering, the first sentence was purely imagined!

100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups Week# 92

I’m very late posting last weeks challenge, never mind! The prompt was YELLOW, in honour of the sun the Julia had been enjoying. The new challenge will be out today at http://jfb57.wordpress.com/ meanwhile here is,

IMG_4172

Gorse

Each spring, the gorse carpets the heath in golden yellow, reminding me of my loss. I walk the moor to immerse myself in its fragrance, though I can hardly bear it. Never has the extreme weather of 2003 been repeated. Some higher power must have punished me to have swept my child away in the river.
Ten years have passed.
‘God give me a sign; let me know my child is safe’ and then, a few feet from me stood a hare, it eyes, almost human, met mine. I held my breath; time seemed to stand still until it hopped away.

…there’s always a sting in the tail….

This is Julia’s prompt for the 100 WCGU this week. Join in at http://jfb57.wordpress.com/2013/05/27/100-word-challenge-week91/ and here is my attempt.

A tale of Tinks tail.

Faerie folk aren’t what they seem you know. Did you think that Tink was Miss Goody Two Shoes? Nah, she didn’t mend pots and pans out of the goodness of her heart. He motive was banging us on the head with them. If we managed to duck in time, then the noise would perforate our dainty little eardrums instead. Those wings made her look like a flutterby; but she was a hornet with a sting in her tail. There’s always a sting in the tale, hers gave us sweet witchypoos a bad name, blaming us for her naughtiness. Into the cauldron with her!

Julia acknowledges that we may take the ‘left field’ with her prompt this week so I saw this as a double edged challenge.

From the Balcony

Parting is such sweet sorrow. Must I utter those words whilst spittle oozes from that pustular mouth? How many times must I spy the rise in his hose and the curl in his leer? He is too long in the tooth to dally as Romeo, canst thou not see? Whilst I, still a mere slip of a boy, I can still appear as a maiden fair, fresh from her mother’s breast.

Good Master Shakespeare, hear my plea, rid me of this Roman. My friend, bring me instead your countryman, the bonny Marlowe, the beauteous serpent to assuage my sorrow. Make haste, on the morrow.

….. the queue was so long …..

You have another 100 words to add, will you join in this week? Visit Julia at http://jfb57.wordpress.com/2013/04/22/100-word-challenge-for-grown-ups-week86/ for more info.

Soup Kitchen

‘See that tall spire?’ said the woman, who wore layers of scruffy clothes, I nodded, thinking that could be me in a few years, if I’m spared. ‘They have food and beds most nights’ she said. Relieved, I went down the hill, but as the light faded so did my energy.
The path levelled out and the spire disappeared from view. My stomach howled, like the wind that blew rubbish around the cobbled maze of streets. I willed my frozen feet forward. A path opened up; there was the church, salvation at last. But the queue was so long, I waited all night for sustenance.

Julia says, ‘As Easter is nearly with us and the shops are bulging with it,’ the prompt is:
…looking at all of that chocolate…

Golden Pods

IMG_4138
I stood looking at all of that chocolate and was carried back in time to my childhood home. Then I didn’t know what chocolate tasted like, I just knew the yellow pods had to be harvested and sent away, so that children in other countries could have something called Easter eggs. But eggs came from chickens.   I asked if a chicken was inside. I covered my eyes as father took a machete and aimed, I didn’t want to see a baby chick cut open. Bang, and then there was something creamy. I put my finger in and tasted, so this was chocolate? But what about the eggs?

100WCGU (7)Julia says . . .

‘I don’t know about you but things seem very odd in the meteorological system! The weather is not behaving as it should anywhere in the world. Cue for the prompt:

…the unseasonal weather meant …’

Muddy Hindrance

The unseasonal weather meant that I could really have done with my boots, but I’d left them behind in my panic. Over and over my feet slid and at one point I nearly fell headlong into the canal. Toby wasn’t strong enough to help very much but at least he could shine the torch on the towpath for me. Every few feet there was a crunch as I stepped on a pocket of ice glazing the mud.

Finally we passed the lock.

‘You’ll never treat anyone like that again will you dad? Goodbye, you bastard.’ With one big shove his body sank into the deepest water.

Someone had to be last! Julia’s prompt last Monday was this photo.

And this is my interpretation.

Turn Me

Turn me, pick me up and turn me.

I am the key to your dreams if you deserve me.

I am the beginning of your worst nightmare if you don’t,

Which will it be?

Turn me; find the lock to reveal the innermost secrets

in the casket of my heart

Or the pain I will feel

if you cause it to break.

Turn me, imprison, confine me in your, love?

Join me in the stale corner of your control

where the remnants of my self-worth lurk

waiting for a few crumbs of affection.

Turn me.

Pick me up and turn me.

Julia says the prompt wrote itself after last weeks. As I only just wrote week 75 I decided to continue where I left off.

On Time part 2

She was entranced by you from the start; my daughter, usually so reticent, actually allowed you to take her hand. In the café Macey giggled with a child on the next table, and you, well you didn’t seem to know who to look at first.

She is mine isn’t she? You asked, squeezing my hand. If I’d wanted to keep it secret I would have. I caught Macey looking from you to me, and back again, wondering.

You gradually moved into our lives from that day, but I can’t help asking myself what’s beneath the surface? Did you choose both of us or Macey?
