Just a few days after holidaymakers enjoyed sightings of a group of three dolphins leaping in the waves in Cornwall, I came across this heart-breaking sight on the beach as Seaton, in east Devon, today. It’s most likely that this beautiful creature drowned. She still had a fish hook attached to her skin, above and to the right of her eye, with a couple of feet of line dangling. She could have become entangled in it and rolled in an attempt to free herself.
Sea temperatures have been above average recently and sightings have increased. This is the first time I’ve seen a dolphin and I don’t ever want to see one like this again. Fishermen, please take care.

It was a grim sight, perhaps I shouldn’t have shared it?
Not good. I remember seeing one on the beach in Cornwall in 1991 – heartbreaking.
I know I’ll never forget it.

It was just dreadful, I really hope they took it away before any children saw it.

My question is why it was left? Surely the fisherman knew he had caught something big. It is a disgrace. I’m so sorry you had to see it Gilly. A beautiful creature that should be seen in the sea.
I don’t think the line would just have broken, the hook was very small compared to the dolphin. It could have come a long way, I hope it wasn’t anyone local. 😦
So sad….we found a baby dolphin like this on a local beach and it made me cry.

Heartbreaking. I am sorry your first sighting of a dolphin had to be like this.
