Tess they are almshouses, homes built for the poor and elderly in a community, some in England have been around for 800 years. They are maintained by charitable trusts who also decide who is eligible for one. This one is in Padstow, Cornwall but the are many in my city, even within five minutes of where I live.
Interesting: 800 years is a LONG time. I’ve read about them but had no idea what they looked like or that they might still be around. Thanks for taking the time to explain. I appreciate it, Gilly.
Quite an unusual blue with the brick isn’t it? Works beautifully.
What is the subject of your header Gilly? Have been trying to figure out what those chimney like things are in vain 🙂
Deceptive – my first impression was of modern architecture but the plaque tells a different story. The terminology may have changed but it’s a rather stark reminder.
love the colors! Where is it?
Its in Padstow 🙂
In Padstow, Cornwall 🙂
I do like your new header!
Thank you it was time for a change 🙂
Love the blue accents as this shade of blue is also my favorite. What kind of building is this?

Really LOVE this header, Gilly!
A perfectly symmetrical image. Love the blues against the red brick. 🙂
That blue, and brick. Two things that always charm me, and you have them both.
Ahh bless you 🙂
That is so beautiful Gilly and you’ve captured it perfectly. Love the blue against the red. Awesome! 😀
That’s what I said, too. Sonel. The colors do compliment each other. 🙂
Thank you, you’re so kind 🙂
Cool photo. Cool building! I love that blue against the brick.

Very nice. And very very cool perspective shot of the arch entrance leading to the other door.
