Serenity (noun):
The state of being calm, peaceful, and untroubled.
Cheri Lucas Rowlands has been to Hong Kong and was impressed by the serenity of the big Buddha in Ngong Ping, on Lantau Island. Cheri challenges us to interpret serenity in photos.
I’ve posted about St Peters Cathedral in my home town, Exeter, before and I probably will again. Today it was the first place I thought of as serene, what do you think?
Perhaps you will join the challenge, https://dailypost.wordpress.com/dp_photo_challenge/serenity/
The cathedrals of Europe are to me very serene and peaceful as well as awesome in the real sense of the word.
janet
They are indeed Janet, especially when they’ve been around as long as this one!
Great photos for serenity.
Many thanks Cee!
such an elegant Gothic cathedral – you are fortunate to be able to visit it when you like. Amazing how serene such a large building can be
It is a very special place!
Your subject could not be more apt. I haven’t visited this cathedral either! I shall put it on the list with Salisbury. An impressive vaulted ceiling and I believe it has a misericord with an elephant! Now that I’d like to see.
It does yes! St Peters is wonderful and I think it has a slight edge on Salisbury, add Chichester as well. 🙂
It is serenity. Serenity is important on the journey to peace. Hugs, Barbara
It is but it’s also a living place!

Definitely a place that embodies serenity.
Thank you Colline!
A wonderful collection of hometown shots. I think I’m a bit busy being awed by the first photo to feel serene! However, serenity comes somehow with vastness and space – beside the ocean, in the desert, in a cathedral, under a rainforest canopy. Can awe be a part of serenity? Is it in fact a necessary part of it? To be serene do you need to be surrounded by something larger than self? You’ve obviously captured me with your representation. Thank you on a cicada-y Saturday morning.
I’m glad I made you pensive Meg! The ceiling in the first photo is the longest run of fan vaulting in Europe!
I wonder how they built these fabulous cathedrals with all of their intricate details and the lack of technology at the time these marvelous structures were build.
They must have been incredible skilful Marcy, it was nearly 1000 years ago!
With the limited tools of the day, those who constructed these cathedrals were miracle workers, if you ask me.
Ahha – I thought of Exeter Cathedral as well, Gilly. Beautiful images of an impressive space.
Thanks Lynne and it makes me happy to know that you liked St Peters!
Such a beautiful cathedral, Gilly. I always love the feeling of calm and peace when I enter such a place.
Yes, there is a very different sound quality somehow – even when its quiet.
All wonderful selection Gilly for the challenge. There is definitely serenity in churches and cathedrals. They look like very peaceful places. 😊
They do indeed Issy, thanks ❤
Exeter Cathedral is, indeed, serene. I love to visit it whenever I am in Exeter.
My favourite place has always been the Lady Chapel!
I am not religious at all Gilly, but I do appreciate beauty when I see it, and I’ve always been impressed with the beautiful architecture of Cathedrals, especially ones like these. Stunning captures! 😀 ♥
I feel much the same Sophia!
Thanks for sharing Gilly, Amazing Temple my friend.
Thank you Jake, it’s a wonderful place!
Truly a serene place of worship
It is so calm and peaceful Pauline 🙂
beautiful pictures 🙂
Thank you Andy 🙂
One of my great aunts and her husband lived in Exeter and were friends of the cathedral. Every Christmas their card was a different view. I wish we had kept them all, they woudl have been a remarkable record of a wonderful place.
I think the cathedral print their own each year, it would be a lovely collection!
I think I might be too overwhelmed by the majesty to actually be serene. Maybe on my second or third visit 🙂 Beautiful!!
I don’t know, but I think you might be speechless Tina!
Love your serenity, Gilly 🙂 Thanks for reminding me that I haven’t yet visited Cheri’s post. I always seem to do things backwards! Happy Sunday to you 🙂
I’m late as usual but happy Sunday to you tomorrow 🙂
Perfect, Gilly. You can almost sense serenity as an actual presence there.
You’ve got it absolutely right Sandra, the atmosphere there is unlike anywhere else I’ve been.
Peaceful, calm and untroubled and with a shining light through the windows, too. Doesn’t get any better! Nice choices for the Serentiy challenge. I really liked this one.
It’s always special to visit, so tranquil! Thanks Ruth.
Such a beautiful vaulted nave Gilly! Most cathedrals have a calming effect on me as well. As long as they are deserted.
It has the longest fan vaulting in Europe!
The house of God is one of the few places we can totally find peace and comfort. To pour out of heart’s tears and turmoils. To find serenity in the middle of life’s many storms and challenges. Beautiful….Thank you.
Thank you, it is a truly peaceful place.
