My friend at work came in today and said she had seen the scarecrows! It’s becoming a modern tradition in the countryside to have scarecrows not just in fields but in hedges, gateways and front gardens. D had seen them in the village of Newton St Cyres, a few miles outside Exeter and this evening I was heading through there anyway.
These are a few of my finds!
I’m afraid it was getting dark and that’s my excuse for grainy photos!
I know that scarecrows are found all over the world, but usually just in fields? These were for a competition, to raise funds for charity and the winner has the prize of, um, well knowing they have the most interesting and goofy creation! Maybe you know about competitions like this somewhere else in the world? Let me know if you do!
Thanks to D for telling they were there 🙂 and visit Margekatherine who is hosting a week of happy posts.

such entertaining scarecrows ….. they are keen to impress the judges! we have scarecrows here in gardens to discourage birds but they are very ordinary compared to these beauties 🙂
Lol competition makes for creativity it seems 🙂
I LOVE them. What an unusual idea.
I think there were a lot more but it was a bit late to go looking for them 🙂
These are adorable, Gilly. Competition, or not, I’m almost inspired to make my own scarecrow … just for fun. Cute share. 🙂
Oh go for it, I’d love to see the results!
If you do take a pic and post the link back here honey!
I enjoyed these scarcecrows. Makes me want one of my own.
That’s two of you that wants one! If you do take a pic and post it back here 🙂
Will do. May be a while – I don’t want just any ole scarecrow.
And they’re all so regal, even the Princess Fiona ogre!! Soooo cool.
It’s jubilee year!
It would seem that there is a theme running through it.
Interesting competition! Well snapped.
I too work for a charity, sooooo
Liz
Maybe you could try it as a fund raiser for your charity Liz!
Whimsical and entertaining–love these crazy scarecrows. In Montclair, there’s one whacky one on someone’s front lawn. It’s always there year round. I’ve always wondered about it.
They are such fun Lisa, thanks for coming round 🙂
These are great Gilly! It’s so funny what people come up with!! I love seeing people’s creativity let loose… 🙂
If I had time I would make one, it would be hilarious!
These people obviously really enjoyed creating these scarecrows. They went all out. I would have a hard time choosing, but I think I like the “Miss Piggy” look-alike in the green dress best.
She is Fiona from Shrek! Great fun must have been had 🙂
A case of mistaken identity. Just goes to show you which generation I’m in.
Not only are they fun but they are for charity which makes it even better. I love when people show their creativity for a good cause. Thanks for sharing the fun.
Thanks for coming round TBM!
They are kinda scary… Imagine bumping into one of those in the dark. 😆
The guardsman was a bit scary with no face!
I love scarecrows because I grew up seeing them in rice fields especially around the harvest season. The ones we had in the Philippines though were not fancily dressed as the ones in your pictures. 😉
We have more serious ones here and they are not so well dressed!
Her Royal Highness Queen Bee is adorable 🙂
My favourite too Madhu!
Aaa out twelve years ago I noticed scarecrows appearing along the Cornish roads, on my way to work. They were entries in a competition, too. They sparked inspiration for a children’s story – never published but loads of fun to write! Thanks for the photo reminders, Gilly! 🙂
Always happy to trigger memories honey!
What fun!
They are 🙂 thank you!
funny slide show!
Thanks Frizz!
Love the scarecrows. Very creative, colorful and even festive. It feels like Halloween in a way. Beautiful photos…Thanks.
haha they are spooky in a Halloween way!
What fun, and Devon has certainly become more colourful since I lived there …
Glad you thought so ans hope you return one day!
