Happy Scarecrow Nonsense

My friend at work came in today and said she had seen the scarecrows! It’s becoming a modern tradition in the countryside to have scarecrows not just in fields but in hedges, gateways and front gardens. D had seen them in the village of Newton St Cyres, a few miles outside Exeter and this evening I was heading through there anyway.

These are a few of my finds!

I’m afraid it was getting dark and that’s my excuse for grainy photos!

I know that scarecrows are found all over the world, but usually just in fields? These were for a competition, to raise funds for charity and the winner has the prize of, um, well knowing they have the most interesting and goofy creation! Maybe you know about competitions like this somewhere else in the world? Let me know if you do!

Thanks to D for telling they were there 🙂 and visit Margekatherine who is hosting a week of happy posts.

  1. such entertaining scarecrows ….. they are keen to impress the judges! we have scarecrows here in gardens to discourage birds but they are very ordinary compared to these beauties 🙂

  2. These are adorable, Gilly. Competition, or not, I’m almost inspired to make my own scarecrow … just for fun. Cute share. 🙂

  3. It would seem that there is a theme running through it.
    Interesting competition! Well snapped.
I too work for a charity, sooooo

  4. Whimsical and entertaining–love these crazy scarecrows. In Montclair, there’s one whacky one on someone’s front lawn. It’s always there year round. I’ve always wondered about it.

  5. These people obviously really enjoyed creating these scarecrows. They went all out. I would have a hard time choosing, but I think I like the “Miss Piggy” look-alike in the green dress best.

  6. Not only are they fun but they are for charity which makes it even better. I love when people show their creativity for a good cause. Thanks for sharing the fun.

  7. I love scarecrows because I grew up seeing them in rice fields especially around the harvest season. The ones we had in the Philippines though were not fancily dressed as the ones in your pictures. 😉

  8. Aaa out twelve years ago I noticed scarecrows appearing along the Cornish roads, on my way to work. They were entries in a competition, too. They sparked inspiration for a children’s story – never published but loads of fun to write! Thanks for the photo reminders, Gilly! 🙂
