Julia has gone for a seasonal prompt this week with ‘and winter will bring . . .’
I didn’t think I would make it, but as I’m babysitting this evening, the late night is an opportunity, so here is
Winter’s Gifts
And winter will bring enduring moon
regal rotund shining for hours through the six a.m. alarm
through sharp ice sky rolling to the west
as dawn ripples from the east.
And winter will bring ice
crunching crystals on grass shooting veneer onto pond
silvered birch a forest of icycled chandeliers.
And winter will bring
spiralling north wind on street corners
whipping around limbs and petrifying ears.
And winter will bring light precious from low sky sun
concentrated through window an illusion of warmth
no substance and stunted shadows.
And winter will bring thrust from the underworld
Galanthus to herald the spring.

This is a great phrase – “sharp ice sky rolling to the west / as dawn ripples from the east”! There’s something very vivid and right about the images of the sky rolling west and the rippling dawn. Then you top yourself with ” light precious from low sky sun / … an illusion of warmth / no substance and stunted shadows” – by that time, I can feel the ice closing in! – before suddenly releasing us into spring.
I love this piece.
Oh you’re such a dear, I’m too lazy to learn how to write poems properly but occasionally I squeeze out a fifteen minute one!
It’s not a sonnet, but the imagery makes it really effective free verse!
Oh my, Gilly. The imagery is stupendous! Yes.
Oh bless you, when I bash out a poem I don’t take it very seriously. 🙂
Your words just created a wonderful world in my head, visualizing the gifts and joys of Winter. Have a great weekend.
Thank you! and you too 🙂
Lovely imagery Gilly – it makes me think of being all snug in the warm and dreaming of Spring 🙂
You are a dear Kathy, I really value your comments 🙂
How lovely, Gilly. I love the last line, especially. 🙂
Love the images (“as dawn ripples from the east.”) and sounds (“crunching crystals on grass shooting veneer onto pond”) evoked by this beautiful poem, Gilly
Lovely, and I dread the petrified ears. You really caught the onslaught of winter in a great way,
Very atmospheric. I can fairly hear the crunching crystals. I love the image of icicle chandeliers. Took a walk in a wood this afternoon, and even just the snowladen branches are lovely. Luckily it’s thawing though…
Snow??? where ever on earth are you?
Switzerland. We had heavy snowfall over the weekend!
thrust from the underworld…what a great line Gilly
Enjoyed this very much Gilly! Love the way you ended it.
I can visualise your words..first snows this weekend and ice already hanging from the eaves!!
Wonderful imagery, Gilly. 🙂
This is a terrific poem… and yes, the imagery sings. 😉
