my favourite ice cream entices me
wrapped in woolly scarf and gloves
on an evening that looks like summer
for a walk to Orcombe by the sea
a hoard of pulled along people
in the charge of manic dogs
young love displayed in the sand dunes
I wonder if they notice the view
of the waves tumbling and rattling
the shingle in their wake
or the gaggle of dark and white geese
resting on barnacled rocks and weed
the board paddling Poseidons hold me balanced
between entertainment and anxiety
as they reach the distant sand bank
then float on the current out to sea
hoping they won’t need the lifeboat
I find shelter from the wind
sit back with my supper from Krispies
the best haddock and chips there could be

That sounds just divine Gilly. What a lovely poem! Thanks for sharing hon and have a great day! *hugs*
another world gilly, yet we are all the same, over and over again .. love your poetry, the sights, tastes and ideas swirling about me!
Love young love!
Oh I can just see it. Miles is one of the dogs pulling me.
This is so beautiful, Gilly. Your word choice and imagery are absolutely perfect, and MAKE us see and feel it all as if we were there. Excellent writing. I’m starting a new writing class in June at one of our local junior colleges, and I wish, wish, wish, I could have you come and speak to the students about your inspiration and about how you produce such perfect imagery — also about how you write so much in so few words in your prose pieces as well.
Since we can’t do that, if you will give me permission — I’m going to save a few of the special pieces and include them as excellent examples of what I’m trying to teach them. Of course, I would make sure your copyright information and full credit is printed on each piece, and hopefully, I can encourage them to visit your blog. I will be including a lesson on blogging for the beginning writer, because I truly believe those who can get involved in a writing community like the WordPress family can benefit greatly from that kind of writing experience.
Oh Sandra you’re so kind if only my writing tutor agreed with you!
It’s strange because I’ve heard people say that Exmouth is dull. All I can say is that it’s such a simple, beautiful place, that if you hang around there for a couple of hours and aren’t inspired your senses must have abandoned you. Inspiration is everywhere isn’t it? in the minutiae of the land, sea and air, so perhaps your students could try something like Myfanwys 100 steps? I would love to reblog some of their work if possible and meanwhile feel free to use anything that is appropriate bearing in mind that I am a lazy writer in too much of a hurry for good punctuation etc 🙂 🙂 🙂
Lovely. Pulled along people (and out in front dogs)
I’ve recently discovered the joy of good ice cream (I never eat any other kind and then only vanilla) have a look in your supermarket and see if they have Mackies vanilla …
You paint a wonderful picture, Gilly. I love the “pulled along people.” 😀
Nothing like a cosy scarf, a walk on the beach and an ice cream. Warm and cold.
A well written poem describing a pleasurable escape. Lovely …
Ah, perfection Gilly! Every sentence so evocative, right down to your fish and chips 🙂
