A twenty foot section of hedge was lost today. Devon hedge, mainly elm but with hawthorn, blackthorn, red Campion, herb Robert, ivy and nettle. At its base there is stone and it must be very old. A hundred years ago it surrounded a field used for cricket, that wouldn’t have stopped the butterflies and bugs from living happily. It’s not the first section to be taken and I wonder when will it stop?
So sad – nature it just disappearing. ~~~~ : – (

What? What? I don’t understand; is this for a new development?
There is a saying that says that the old must go in order for the new to arrive. We just moved and into a home..and the lady did not take care of her pine trees, give of them…three are about to die…we did so much work and now we see “babies” in other words, growth! I think they needed to be pruned and loved for and we did it so they can live on. I hope anyhow: two trees may still not make it.
i really like this one Gilly – you say so much in all the underlying layers of this piece
I agree.
You’ve got me craving wild tangled things.
Hedge-napped? Was a ransom demanded?
Very moving. I hate seeing nature destroyed.
Today its even worse because they have taken out more 😦
Thanks all, today even more of the hedge has been dug out. If it was summer I could list more of the things that grow there, today for instance I’ve seen some fresh cleavers.
Loss of tradition, heritage, history and character. Such a shame.
That’s very sad. I suppose it’s all in the name of ‘progress,’ whose I wonder.
