As part of my decision to focus more often on the UK, my photo for the Sunday post this week was taken on Dartmoor, hope you like its stark beauty.
At 368 square miles, Dartmoor is the largest and wildest area of open country in Southern England, this shot is taken from Houndtor and the granite outcrop in the distance is Haytor. I believe that some areas on the moor were used in the filming of Warhorse.
This is part of Jakes Sunday post here, http://jakesprinters.wordpress.com/2012/02/25/sunday-post-landscape/
Amazing Landscape Gilly ,Thank you 🙂
Loving your gravatar Jake!
Just try something new , thanks Gilly 🙂
Beautiful picture, Gilly! This is one place which I’d love to explore on foot. 😉
It’s a walkers paradise Malou with gentle strolls and long distance waymarked paths that can be quite challenging 🙂
wonderful photo, like an oil painting!
Whenever I go up there I wish I could paint and draw but sadly I’ll have to stick to photography – and keep practising at that even!
Great shot with lots of perspective. I love the moor!
Thanks Julia, yes the moors are beautiful but can also be gloomy in the mist and rain.
Stunning landscape, and what a beautiful sky.
I’m sure you have been down to Devon haven’t you Isabel?
Yes, but it’s a fair few years since I’ve been back.
Any landscape comprising of mountains draws me in.
Absolutely stunning Gilly! Do you know how nice it is to come to everyone’s blog and see all the different photo’s from all over the world? It’s awesome. Beautiful post! 🙂
I agree! It’s brilliant and only this morning I was telling a friend how lovely it is to have glimpses into other peoples real worlds and not just what you read in the media. And I’ve learnt so much as well 🙂
This looks so unspoiled still. And that’s rare nowadays. If they filmed a movie here, I hope they did not destroy much.
No they aren’t allowed to do anything there that changes or damages anything in any way, its protected for the nation.
Lovely, and stark beauty describes it well Gilly.
It’s lovely but not on the scale of the wilderness you’re used to! No dangerous wildlife either!
Very nice!
Thanks Carrie!
Great shot! It makes me want to run to the farthest, highest point – well to the base of it anyway.
Beautiful and rugged. I love it.
It’s a wilderness without being too big, people still manage to get lost and in trouble but because they are unprepared.
Tag! You’re it! 🙂

What a beautiful place. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you it is wonderful and about this time of year I start getting itchy feet to get up there!
Breathtaking! My kind of landscape for sure. I sure would like to ride that area for a few days and check it out first hand from the back of a horse.
There are opportunities for riding and Dartmoor ponies are a recognised breed, not big enough for adults to ride. They all belong to someone but roam freely on the moor. Each September they are rounded up and some are sold.
So cool to know. There is pony run off the coast here once a year as well in July. Sometimes the herds need to be thinned, and it’s a humane way to find the critters loving homes.

Don’t you just love learning stuff from wordie bloggers? thanks for this, what lovely sharing 🙂

loved it
a landscape I could wander in for days. wonderful photo.
You’re rarely more than five mile from a road of sorts but you can walk for hours without seeing anyone.
I feel like hiking …. terrific …!!!!!
It gets a bit cold up there and even in summer can be windy, wet and misty!
Yes, I do love the beauty of this area. You’ve captured the special charm of it that makes it inviting in spite of its touch of wilderness. Good shot.
Just beautiful. Like a painting only nature made it. Thank you. Have a wonderful day.
Looking at the lovely Southern English Landscapes…Even way down South in London Town…it’s easy to see how it has become the fairy Tale capitol, and land of the Giants.
I love this landscape. I could stare at it all day.
It’s funny but on the moor you find people taking part in various degrees of activity, perhaps you would be the one that drives to a car park at the bottom of Haytor and gets out a deck chair and flask and sits looking at it all day!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
But I don’t think so!
Love your picture, and love the area down there. Also haven’t visited for awhile.
I have tried SO many times to post my link on the WordPress site, but they won’t accept it.
IsobelandCat has tried to post it for me too.
What is the secret of posting a link on WordPress? Any ideas?
Would you try and post it for me?!

I think I’ve done it, I have the same problem commenting on blogspots, sometimes it works often it doesn’t!
The one thing I love most, truly most, about WordPress is my glimpse into other countries. Here I sit in Australia, seeing such beauty out there in the world. Great capture.
Aw – thanks Gilly. That’s really kind of you! It’s now well and truly up there as a couple of other kind people heeded my plea for help too! Thanks so much.
Terrific landscape. 😉
Yes, it is beautiful!
Thanks for sharing Dartmoor . . . very green and looks like a great placed for a hike! 🙂
What a lovely place, wish I could visit there, it’s so green and lush!
