The garden at Sissinghurst, in Kent was created in the 1930’s by Vita Sackville-West and her husband, Harold Nicolson. Now a National Trust property, it is looked after by a large team of gardeners and is divided into ‘rooms’, each with a different style, planting scheme colour theme. Here are some photos, I have masses of flower shots but for now I’ll show you general views of the garden.

Sissinghurst was beautiful, it totally lived up to my expectations. There were a good few plants I’ve rarely or never seen, and many dark purple flowers which are my favourites. It was the last day of my holiday and I was suffering from garden burn out, they were all running into one, but I hope you like this little glimpse.
What a wonderful garden!!!! Thank you, Gilly for a refreshing glimpse to a dream garden! 🙂
Looks like a great place to go and visit Gypsy, I love places like that.
Oooo! Vita certainly knew how to create a garden!
very nice place to visit,, never been there, so on my list…;)
Stunning. Gorgeous. Picturesque. Wonderful, wonderful photographs, Gilly. I enjoyed each and every one.
Thanks for sharing these beautiful pictures, Gilly. I imagine it would be lovely to spend a day there. 🙂
Breathtaking to see the layout from the top! I love the contrast of old bricks and flowers. 🙂
Harold’s biography of Vita inspired my teenage imagination, so this wonderful garden has been a pinup – your photo essay highlights just why it’s so admired and the tower, orchestra and views amplify its romance. Gorgeous, Gilly. But tell me, what are those pointed white caps? 🙂
Vita had a study in the tower but photos weren’t allowed inside, imagine how inspiring it would be to be able to pop up to the top for some fresh air and the view! It’s great to know that you have heard of her, I wasn’t sure how many people outside of England would! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oast_house
Wonderful, especially the white garden. It makes me think of Alice in Wonderland, and the a queen of hearts ordering all the flowers painted red 🙂
As always your thinking is wonderful!
How beautiful! I love the little well. And i don’t remember ever having seen red climbing roses!
But you do have roses in India – in the north at least!
We do. But I have only seen climbing varieties in pink.
So very British, Gilly. I love the band playing on the lawns, and all so correctly attired. You had a great view from up in the tower. 🙂
It was worth the climb for the 360 degree view!
I’ve promised myself a visit, but I doubt it will be this year…..
I’ve wanted to go for many years and I must say it was wonderful, but Nymans beats it!
I’ll remember that. Thanks
Really? I have never been to Nyman’s either. Thinking now that maybe we should ‘pop’ in on the way home after our week in Kent.
Where is Nymans, Gilly? Sissinghurst always looks fabulous on the garden programmes and I really like your oast houses shot 🙂
It’s in West Sussex, near Haywards Heath. I’ve been to loads of gardens, national trust or others and it’s my favourite by miles 😊 go if you get the chance!
I will 🙂 Bit of a long walk from our place, even for a restless type!
You said on my post: http://wp.me/p3jVw4-qx that this might have to be a NY resolution Jo 😀 Such a shame I don’t live down that way still or I would have invited you to stay with me and we could have gone together.
Aww, that would have been lovely, Jude 🙂 I feel quite disoriented because I’m walking round the fortaleza at Sagres right now! A hint for my Monday walk 🙂 🙂
We used to do little weekend breaks all the time at one point, Jude, and I loved it, even if the weather didn’t cooperate. That was before our ‘place in the sun’ and I guess you can’t have everything. 🙂
True. And Tavira does look beautiful.
It’s all Novak now, isn’t it? The sun’s just come out and I’m going to snatch 10mins in the garden before it changes its mind 🙂
Sun playing hide and seek here today – hot when it’s out! Novak should have won this by now – I hope he scrapes through, but they are both playing superbly!
This is breathtaking, Gilly. 🙂
I see what you mean about sharing my love of flowers – I am going to have to have a wander through your blog now Gilly. When were you at Sissinghurst? I have a post on the garden too: http://wp.me/p3jVw4-qx
and will more than likely visit next week as we are going to be in Kent for a few days (Canterbury then the Weald of Kent). Thinking of Bateman’s, Great Dixter, Pashley Manor too – or would you recommend other places?
Thanks for the follow ❤
Jude xx
This isn’t my area but I went to Great Dixter many years ago when Christopher Lloyd was still alive, it was stunning!I was at Sissinghurst last month 🙂
I can’t reply above about Nymans, but yes it’s probably my number one now!
What’s your area Gilly? South Devon?
