100 Word Challenge for Grown Ups Week# 121

100wcgu-7Julia has been to see Gok Wan so her prompt this week is . . . on the cat walk . . .

The Moment I Wake Up

My first heels. Only an inch high, but oh-so-shiny patent, with little velvet bows on the front. They’re beige, and a perfect match for my shift dress. It’s a soft yellow, big bold flowers and way above my knees.

I’m wearing Miners Dead Beige lipstick and Pan Stick. My hair is tied high with a chiffon scarf, looped into a puffy ball and Linda Wright gave me a squirt of her Aqua Manda.

I’m thirteen, it’s my school fashion show, and I’m strutting on the cat walk in the dress that got me first prize in needlework class.

I Say a Little Prayer.

Lazy Poets Thursday Haibun

Ghana 1

Along the Tamale Road

She’d packed her shop up for the day, all hope of sales abandoned. Resigned to eating the hard boiled eggs herself, with the plantain that no-one wanted either. All morning she’d snacked on the pastries she baked before dawn. Once upon a time she couldn’t make enough of them, they sold like hot cakes. A tourist asked if her canopy was for sale, she’d said no – how would she have shade without it? Perhaps . . . perhaps she could try making some small ones to sell.

What’s this? A tourist jeep stopping, she gathered her wares in her apron and ran. ‘Fresh eggs, tomato, banana, what will you buy?’

Just Because . . .

Just because it’s been a long Monday at work

because it’s no longer January

because in twenty four days it will be March

because I’m not walking to and from work in the dark

because the days are getting longer

and that means spring

and that means summer

and that means the colour, form  and fragrance

of flowers and butterflies

bees and damselflies

and sunshine

because of all these things

I’m bringing you . . .

Pictures from a few years ago taken at a popular TV gardeners home plot, deep in the heart of Devon. I expect it’s changed since then, but it will still be lovely, relaxed and packed with variety. The clue is in the initials, if you visit she may even be there pottering.

Every Stitch a Memory

One hundred years ago World War 1 began. One of the many ways it is being commemorated is a beautiful quilt created by South West Quilters. On January 30th it was presented to the Royal British Legion at Westpoint, Exeter, where the quilters have had a stand.

The quilt will be part of an exhibition ‘We Will Remember’, touring Devon this year. Every Stitch a Memory is what the quilt has been named and it will be raffled to raise money for the British Legion. Should you be lucky enough to see the quilt this year, please buy a raffle ticket, the British Legion do wonderful work.

My first photo shows a section, DSC_1001

it was made in sections by 50 different quilters. The second, I’m showing so that you can see the whole of it – as high as I am tall, but I couldn’t avoid the glare from a spotlight especially with my phone camera. DSC_1002

So this beautiful object will still be around to mark the 200th anniversary of the war to end all wars.

With thanks to the very skillful ladies of the South West Quilters group.

Chinese New Year

As you must know the Chinese Year of the Horse has begun. To celebrate it I’m posting a few pics of horses I’ve met , some of which you may have seen before. Click for a bigger view of any photo.

I wasn’t born in a horse year and as I’m not keen on the animal of my birth year I’m not telling you what it is!

This is the best article I came across about the year of the horse, enjoy!

Sea King

They rush to get the boys off the football pitch. One, in green shorts and a striped top dribbles a ball in circles, oblivious of the shouts; he’s waiting for grommet surgery. Soon even he hears it, or feels the vibrations, and runs out of the way of the big yellow bird, coming in to land next to the hospital. It’s the Sea King again, whenever I hear it, I think of you.

If the air ambulance had space for both of us, you might have made it too, but it didn’t, they took me, leaving you to bleed.
