Varied Votives

One of the places I enjoyed most in Tuscany last year, was Fiesole, somewhere I knew little about until I got there. As well as the amazing Roman theatre, there’s the Civic Archaeological Museum, packed with displays and information about the Etruscan, Roman and Longobard history of the town. I was enthralled by these little votives, especially the dancing satyr, so I’m sharing these variations on the theme of Etruscan bronzes, for this weeks photo challange. I believe they were excavated in the 19th and early 20th century.

Fiesole lies five miles to the north east of Florence, high in the hills and you can catch a frequent bus close to Piazza San Marco.

Weathered steps

And they’ve been weathering since two hundred years B.C.

Fiesole

these steps are Roman, and to be found in Fiesole near Florence, Italy. They’re my entry for this weeks photo challenge at the daily post. Happy Thursday all!

Winter Growth

It’s taken me a while to decide what to post for last Wednesday’s photo challenge, I kept hoping I’d have an idea of something that wasn’t predictable. Now I’m fast running out of time and nothing unusual has sprung to mind, so here are my offerings.

These pictures were taken in early February a few years ago, as you know by now, in winter I’m always looking for signs of new growth and spring to arrive. Are you joining the challenge this week?

Ascending Houndtor

One of my favourite of the well known spots on Dartmoor is Hound Tor. The area is surrounded with legends and history, and it’s believed to have inspired Conan Doyle’s ‘Hounds of the Baskervilles’.

I’s a steady ascent from the small parking area and the view is wonderful.

If you have the energy, once you reach the top, you can drop down the other side to the ruins of a medieval village where you’ll be surrounded by ghosts from the past.

This is my entry for the weekly photo challenge of Ascend.

Serene Devon

If your world is anything like mine, then at this time of the year you may feel ready to flop beside the tv, or relax with a good book. If your world is anything like mine, there’s a good chance that isn’t going to happen!

So how then can we find some tranquility? Well how about enjoying the serene Devon countryside?

Green pastures east of Exeter, for this weeks photo challenge, serene.

Experimental

When Krista posted the theme of ‘Experimental’, for this weeks photo challenge, I knew I would have a play with an image. I got my first copy of Photoshop at lest twelve year ago and back then I would spend ages trying things out. I never became proficient, perhaps if I’d had some lessons, I might have been good at it.

Now of course there are far easier ways to create with free apps for tablets and phones, my camera has lots of instant and fun settings of its own.

So here’s my entry, edited with Nik free software and then cropped with photoshop elements.

Experimenting is fun, perhaps you’ll join in?

A Temporary Stage

Ben Huberman has a lovely autumn photo this week as an example for the weekly photo challenge of temporary. Very apt, the autumn colour really is fleeting, enjoy it while you can.

I did an autumn post last week as a Thursday poem, so I’ve gone back in time for my temporary entry, to Colyford Goose Fayre a few years ago.

Where’s there’s always a temporary stage.

And all are welcomed.
The town crier may look grumpy.
But he’s happy ringing his bell, ‘Oyez, Oyez, Oyez!

As for the Morris Men, well they just do their crazy thing, don’t worry it’s only temporary.

Can you resist a peek?

Nosy, moi? If a gate is open surely it invites little peeks.

Especially if there’s a garden inside.

Of course some people are innately inquisitive!

And some just wonder if it’s worth climbing to the top of the hill.

If there’s a cafe opportunity, I like a peek before I decide.

It’s imperative to know what’s beneath the castle wall.

and even little ducks have to take a peek before they go under the bridge.

Have you joined this weeks photo challenge yet? In case you haven’t guessed, the theme is peek!
