Every Stitch a Memory

One hundred years ago World War 1 began. One of the many ways it is being commemorated is a beautiful quilt created by South West Quilters. On January 30th it was presented to the Royal British Legion at Westpoint, Exeter, where the quilters have had a stand.

The quilt will be part of an exhibition ‘We Will Remember’, touring Devon this year. Every Stitch a Memory is what the quilt has been named and it will be raffled to raise money for the British Legion. Should you be lucky enough to see the quilt this year, please buy a raffle ticket, the British Legion do wonderful work.

My first photo shows a section, DSC_1001

it was made in sections by 50 different quilters. The second, I’m showing so that you can see the whole of it – as high as I am tall, but I couldn’t avoid the glare from a spotlight especially with my phone camera. DSC_1002

So this beautiful object will still be around to mark the 200th anniversary of the war to end all wars.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Grand

Grand. It all depends on your interpretation doesn’t it? If I go to ‘grand’ places I tend to focus in on the small details rather than the big picture, so maybe that’s why, even with forty thousand photos, I found grand hard to find.

I don’t feel very grand today, but I remember that I felt the Bosphorus was grand. From a boat, this body of water is awe inspiring as are the buildings that line it.

Here is the Ciragan Palace, now a luxurious hotel.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Unexpected

‘The world is an interesting place: we stumble upon unexpected things each day’ says Cheri Lucas Rowland.

Of course we should expect the unexpected in an art gallery, but this is my offering for the challenge. Oki Naganode by Julia Lohmann was an installation at the V & A back in September, made from Naga Kombu, a type of Japanese Seaweed. It has been stretched by hand over a framework of cane. Lohmann uses a variety of natural materials including bone and cow and sheep stomach. Oki Naganode was created to show the design potential of seaweed, and is around eight feet high.

Dartmoor in Devon is a National Parkthat has lots of exposed granite hilltops or Tors. The rock dates back to the carboniferous period and thrust through the surface around 280 million years ago. a variety of mineral ores have been extracted for centuries. Now we can see how it cooled into layers all those millennia ago.

One of my frequent habits is my lunchtime stroll at work, I just have to leave the office and get some fresh air and peace. I always have my mobile with me and often make calls because I can’t at my desk. Having it with me is useful, it has a great little camera and there’s lots to see all year round.

So here is my habit, snapping everything from flowers, leaves and nature, to firemen and my own sunbathing legs one day when it was too hot to move!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Horizon

It was difficult to avoid a sunset and sea photo for this weeks challenge but eventually I found this one. Over in Suffolk, if you walk south along the beach from Lowestoft you will find this church. It was something I’d never seen before, a church on a beach so even though the light was dull I snapped it for the memory.

Weekly Photo Challenge: From Lines to Patterns

Sidmouth in Devon has lovely Georgian and Regency houses on the seafront, most of which are now hotels. They make a real effort in summer with their hanging baskets which soften the lines and patterns of the windows and doors.

Off the Wall

or maybe I’ve just lost the plot, what do you think? This is my attempt at this week’s photo challenge, which is really hard. Cheri Lucas Rowlands asks that we try to use photos with an unusual point of view but I found it difficult to come up with anything framed in an unusual way that I haven’t posted before.
