Weekly Photo Challenge: From Lines to Patterns

Sidmouth in Devon has lovely Georgian and Regency houses on the seafront, most of which are now hotels. They make a real effort in summer with their hanging baskets which soften the lines and patterns of the windows and doors.

This is my entry for the weekly photo challenge but I think I’ll be back with more because I particularly like the idea. Thanks to Cheri Lucas Rowlands, http://dailypost.wordpress.com/2013/09/20/lines-patterns/

Inside Houdou

In the heart of the medina in Marrakech lies a beautiful haven of peace. Even it’s name, Houdou, means serenity, in Arabic. It’s a 17th century mansion, with an inner courtyard, shady and green with citrus trees and the ever present buntings chanting their song. The roof is part shaded and part in full sun, a lovely place to rest and enjoy a view of the Atlas on a clear day. There is a hammam and if you’re too hot from shopping in the souk, there is a plunge pool to cool you down. Food is freshly prepared, local but with influences from the French owners.

I’ve tried to show you what it’s like INSIDE a traditional riad, I hope you like it and if ever you visit Marrakech I recommend it highly!

Off the Wall

or maybe I’ve just lost the plot, what do you think? This is my attempt at this week’s photo challenge, which is really hard. Cheri Lucas Rowlands asks that we try to use photos with an unusual point of view but I found it difficult to come up with anything framed in an unusual way that I haven’t posted before.

View point

I started to think about editing and had the idea of a dream perspective, this is the result.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Sea

I’ve chosen three photos this week, very different ones but all of the sea.

The first was taken at Cape Coast, in Ghana. I’ve chosen it simply because it was taken on an unspoilt beach, that had just a small hotel with hut rooms looking at the ocean.IMG_2845

The next was taken here in England. I think I  might have posted it before but I still love it and hope you will. I call it ‘Mermaids’.

This one isn’t a very good quality image but I’ve chosen it because it reminds me of a time when I did somethingthat was very brave for me. You see, I’m not a very good swimmer, I’m scared to put my head under or to go out of my depth. I think it’s because when I was a child someone pushed me under in a swimming pool. But when I went to Borneo a few years ago I had the chance to snorkel on a coral reef and I knew it was a once in a lifetime time chance. I forced myself to have a go and even though I was tense all the time, it is one of the best things I have ever done.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Focus

Cheri Lucas Rowlands tells us about the basics of depth of field and aperture and compares the effects of using a shallow depth of field to a a greater one. She asks that we :-

  • Snap a photo of something or someone in focus, against a blurred background.
  • Share a panorama or landscape in sharp focus, in which you can see details far away.
  • Use a camera app to force focus (or blur) in an experimental way.
  • Take multiple photos of the same scene or subject using different aperture settings and publishing the results.

Do you agree that my first photo is rather dull, whereas the second is okay?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreshadow

This weeks challenge is well timed for me. I’ve been trying to record an Agapanthus from bud to bloom for the last couple of weeks. Some of the photos are taken quite late in the evening, some earlier and todays just now at 5.30. There have been days with gloomy weather, some with sun and some rainy so the image quality varies quite a bit. Also getting in the right position has been amusing  today, I had to go from the opposite direction to see the most open parts of the flower and got tangled in the shrubbery!

So the foreshadow,

and today the finale.

I’m sorry I don’t think I’ll be able to catch up with  your blogs, I haven’t had much sleep in the last couple of nights waiting for Scarlett and now I’m shattered but I’ll see you soon!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Fresh

Otterton in East Devon has it’s own mill, producing flour and powered by the River Otter. This is real flour, not the mass produced stuff we find in the supermarkets, but artisan quality and very tasty. They mill a few times a month and you can buy it FRESH in standard packs or larger sacks. I actually tried it, freshly milled and delicious.
